Glad to hear Nicole & Emily are training for the marathon - all of the training is worth it when you cross the finish line!! One thing I learned early is that the long run is the most important weekly training event and the one you should not skip. Also, there are several marathon training races (10 miler, half marathon, 20 miler) that can really help you. It's a chance to make sure you're comfortable with your running clothes, you've got the "glide" on the right spots (to prevent chafing), your stomach can handle the sports drink that will be handed out on race day, and you've practiced eating something during hte race (gels, etc.). If you have questions, please post them - I'd be happy to share my experiences.

Here's a good RunnersWorld series on training for a marathon - check it out as there is information for a first time marathoner:

Go Nickel! My unsolicited advice would be to take things slowly, with little goals along the way. Don't focus on the full length all the time, but rather set intermediate goals during your training plan. Maybe your first big goal is a 10 miler - focus on that. Then, when you kick some glute on that, maybe think 1/2 marathon. Then you get that behind you, and you move to the next step. That way, you are working your way towards the October race, but you aren't constantly faced with the idea of going 26.2 which can seem a bit daunting (especially when jsut ramping up your miles). But once you step your way up, and have some of the longer runs under your belt, then you shift your focus to the 26.2 and it doesn't sound so bad. Heck, at that point, it will just be a little bump above your last long run.

I think a few of us will be going long in the fall, so there are possible running partners out there. Let us know what we can do to help.

Best of luck, Stu

Hey Guys!!
Thanks for all your encouragement and advice. I am super excited and pumped to do this!
I am off to a rough start right now trying to fight off a hip injury. But I am excited to get back on track and start running again. I think I ran too much too soon (Stue, I should have listened to your advice :) Any advice you guys have to give would be great, I am all ears at this point! This is all new to me.

Thanks again!

Give us an update, Nicole. How's the hip? You getting in some miles?

I’m trying to run every other day but my hip is still really bothering me! I can run about 3 miles and then I’m done. I’m going to keep trying but at this point I’m not really sure what to do. I am definitely frustrated! I am going to try to run Friday or Saturday and see how that goes but I may have to break down and go see a doctor.
