Baby it's cold Outside!

Good conversation on the blog!

1. Elaine can get Under Armour gear at cost! If you see something ya like, contact Elaine. She's our resource!

2. Stu says that the rule of thumb is that if your cold symptoms are from the neck up, go ahead and run. If symptoms are below the neck, take the day off.

3. Meet at Antrim on Saturday at 10:30.

4. How is everyone doing in the cold? It's good that Bob brought his gear on Sunday - winter came quickly. Has anyone picked up any new stuff? I know you'll be tempted to just use the treadmill or just not run/walk at all. Stay on the wagon with us! Get your gear and get outside!

5. All Panther teams have practice tonight. Do we need to go for a run/walk during practice? How about if we meet in the lobby at 6:55 and then go for a walk/run at the gym at 7:00? Any takers?

Cheers to you
E

I would like to walk tonight since I could not get myself out of bed this morning to go to the gym. So I will be there at 6:55.

Okay, I am a bit frustrated. I went out this morning and had to stop my run/walk after 20 minutes. My knees and legs were hurting sooo much. Anyone else feeling this discomfort almost to the point of pain?
I came home and stretched and did strength work but I am feeling whimpy.
Any advice???

Well today was my day off so I bundled up and went for a run. I bought some Under Armour Pants (I needed a pair to wear until I can get with Elaine) At first I thought of returning them because of the price but this morning I determined they were well worth the money. Once I got started I was warm and never once felt the cold. I wore a sleeveless dri-fit top underneath a long sleeve dri-fit top and it was perfect.

Well I made it to a little over 3/4of a mile this morning without stopping. I hope to get to a mile on my next run. For some reason, mabye its the cold, I had a very easy run-no pains anywhere and I felt pretty good, despite my cold.

In addition to the new pants I bought the Nike + Ipod. I just love gadgets. I didn't claibrate it before I ran this morning and the distance was way off. I hope once I do this that it will be more accurate.

I wish I had read the blog this morning before I ran or I would join everyone tonight. I must take advantage of every chance I get with no kids and I plan to take a trip to Dick's tonight to check out some other gear.

Don't know yet if I will make it to Antrim on Saturday yet. It just depends on how everything else works out this weekend. If not, I will still do a run close to home.

Elaine-

Why don't you give me an e-mail at thekyles4@yahoo.com and we can work out the details of an order. There are a couple things I would like. If they don't go through that's OK I just appreciate the effort that you put into volunteering to do this for us. Thanks!

I was so mad that I did not read the blog earlier today. When I got to the gym Vickie asked me was I going to run today and I was so sad that I was not prepared.

Anyways, I went to Target yesterday and I bought pants, a shirt, a jacket, sportsbra and socks. I need to go to Dicks though and get something for my ears. I am planning on running tomorrow after work. Jaz is going on a field trip with her after school program so I am going to run while I am waiting for her to get back.

Constance, I was having pain in my knee like you described (I have dislocated my one knee several times so when it rains or gets cold it bothers me sometimes.) When we first started running my knees would really hurt, but they don't bother me as much anymore. So maybe you will have the same luck that I did.

Some more cold weather running tips:
FIRST:
Just because it's colder outside, don't assume you need less fluids before during and after your exercise. Your body can work 10-15% harder in the cold weather (just to keep warm), so even though you may not feel like you need to drink water / sports drinks; you should. Also, if you get dry mouth or very thirsty during a workout, it means you're not drinking enough water on a daily basis. Other than coffee, water is about the only thing I drink and even during long runs and races, I never feel thirsty.

SECOND:
It's tough to run when it's cold and windy and the tendency is to put your head down and stare at the ground. THis restricts your lung capacity and reduces your oxygen intake. Try and keep your head up and eyes forward. Also, try and keep your arms moving forward (kind of like the bar that connects the wheels on a train engine) - it will pull you forward, especially when it's windy, you're tired, or you going up a hill.
