Week 1 - Day 4 "Write it down!"

I'm always pushing the kids at the gym to record their habits - they hate doing it. You might think, "I will never forget this awful run." But you will. It's important that you record your mileage/times along with information about how you feel during your run. You will look back and read over your log books and you'll be so proud of your accomplishment. You'll also learn about your body and spirit. You might find out that you get a tummy ache if you eat bananas before a run. You might find out that you are more comfortable in Nike rather than New Balance. You might discover that you mananage stress better if you run in the a.m. rather than the evening. Write it down - it's more than a training log; think of it as a diary.

Good for you for taking action! Debra and Vickie have already hit the road again! Hey that's wonderful news! How about the rest of y'all? Bob, how are you feeling coming into the marathon? Elaine, any plans for a 5k soon? Jules, are you joining us on Sunday or the week after? Constance, should we try somne yoga next time? Abigail, are you and Adam planning for a Thanksgiving race? Amber, have you been kidnapped?

Keep at it!
Post your updates under this posting (Day 4)

I always have great intentions of keeping a journal. Unfortunately, it never seems to happen. Too many days go by where I'm running from one thing to the next and then the days start running from one to the next with no journal.

When I got back from the Outer Banks and saw the pictures of our vacation it was like a wake-up call for me. It was time to make some changes. I stumbled on this website www.fitday.com. It was a free online program where I could log what I was eating and compare it to the exercise I was doing. After using it for a couple of weeks, I purchased the stand alone program from the website (I think for $20). It has made a difference for me.

In this program, I log my exercise, what I'm eating, how I'm feeling, set goals, etc. and I can go back and review it all in graph form. Gotta love that. :)

Anyway, I'm not good at writing it down, but this certainly helped me. It's been four months now and I still use it daily.

I must concur with Em. Writing down what you do makes a very big difference. I went on a diet and within two weeks I very sick and didn't know why. This time if I'm feeling sick I can look and see what is making me feel yucky. I have learned that if I eat Sushi, (no matter how much I eat) I will not lose weight that day. I love to watch the number in my weight column get smaller and the numbers in the miles ran get bigger. It keeps me motivated and on track. I keep my journal in my planner which I always have with me so its never a hassle to write down what I have eaten, how far I ran, the time, etc.

I will admit, I tend to fudge my running numbers a tad. I'll take of 30 seconds here and there. If you have an iPod, Nike makes a program that you can plug in to your iPod and it will coach you as you run. After you run you can plug it into your computer and it will keep track of your progress for you. I just bought the new iPod and Nike hasn't come out with the version for the new iPod, but as soon as it is out, I will be there to buy it. You are supposed to have a specific shoe for it but I found a site the explains really well how to get around that (http://podophile.com/2006/07/14/shoe-hacker-nikeipod-sport-kit-shoe-mod/). There's no cheating if it records the info for you! I've heard comments that the distance can be off here and there, but I don't care if I have to take an extra few steps, I need them!

Adam and I... well mostly I, are training for the Thanksgiving day race in Columbus. We are doing the Turkey Trot (http://columbusturkeytrot.com/turkeytrot/frontrunner.htm). Five miles is about five miles more than I have ever ran before I started training. It has not been easy I HATED to run when I first started. I fought with myself EVERY SINGLE DAY. Now, I can't wait to get home and beat the time/distance that I did yesterday. I am so impressed with myself! So stick with it, it gets easier! As for my husband, well... he's doing a great job of supporting my efforts...from the couch.

I use both FitDay and the Nike+. I love them both!

I've been using FitDay on and off for a couple of years now. I love the fact that you can add in custom foods. So I have a list longer than my body of custom foods. LOL. Mainly because the search feature is somewhat a tad bit tedious. It's lovely because when you say...meet Emily for breakfast at First Watch, you can enter the nutritional information for the Power Wrap! :)

I really love the Nike+ system. The distance is off a tad, but more specifically, the time exercising is accurate. You can set goals, whether it's time or distance and halfway through it tells you that you're halfway done! I find those time/distance markers are wonderful for keeping me going. I love a race that has the quarter miles marked, because it allows me to see that I've gone that far!

I just started back on the wagon this week. (Although I've been on the wagon several times over the last year...) Something in my mind clicked this time. I joined Lifestyle and I've been to the gym every day this week. I met with my old personal trainer and I'm going to lift with her three days a week.

And...I'm going to train/walk/run with the Panther Moms! :) You guys have always been so nice to me. I really appreciate the support I've received from everyone at Midwest over the last few years.

I haven't looked at any specific races...I don't know that any of the Thanksgiving ones will work for me since I'll be in Cleveland that weekend. But Emily and I were just discussing how much fun the Christmas races are! I'm definitely up for those!

Peace Out my peeps! :)
